In the short film, Displaced, the Kovalchuk family describes their experiences in March of 2022 as they fled Kyiv in the early days of the Russian invasion. As one of the earliest Ukrainian refugee families to arrive in the United States in spring 2022, we are given a first-hand view of some of their initial days getting situated in the U.S., moving between temporary homes, and signing their children up for school. While the intimate description of their experiences and thought processes offer unique insight into the experiences of a Ukrainian refugee family, the film is rather narrow in scope, lacking in context and barely scratching the surface of the deep psychological, social, and financial challenges the family faces. As such, this film is recommended with reservations as a case study documenting one Ukrainian refugee family’s experiences. Libraries might consider Film Movement’s In the Rearview as a more in-depth examination of the experience of fleeing Ukraine during the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.
