Reviewed by Gerald Notaro, University Librarian, Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, University of South Florida, St. PetersburgAIDS Update: The Latest Facts About HIV and AIDS is a clear, straightforward video that presents the most recent developments on HIV and AIDS treatment, testing, statistics, and therapies. The target audience is teens, whose infection rate we learn from the video is rising at an alarming rate. There is a running narrative from those infected with HIV, those with AIDS, and HIV/AIDS counselors and educators. All convey their feelings and facts in a calm yet serious tone. This will prove more effective than earlier videos that tried to scare teens rather than educate. Common misconceptions are addressed, such as being able to tell who is infected by looks, or that everyone responds positively to new treatments. Stressed is the role drug and alcohol use among teens has had on the increase in infection rate. AIDS Update: The Latest Facts About HIV and AIDS comes with a valuable Teacher Resource book which could easily be used by students who view the on their own. Both the video and binder would make an important addition to any library collection, but especially to school libraries.
