Reviewed by Gerald Notaro, University Librarian, Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, University of South Florida, St. PetersburgBackstage is part of the Stagecraft and The Arts Collection series. Chapter titles include Set Design, Props and Costumes, Lighting and Sound, Make-Up, and Was It Alright on the Night. The circus-like introductory scenes indicate an elementary school viewing audience, but the video is actually appropriate up to adult viewing. Each chaptered title is divided into excellent segments that can be referenced individually. The series was produced and filmed in Great Britain so younger viewers will have to get used to the dialects. Theater professionals are interviewed and their models and diagrams are used to significant effect. All emphasize the importance of proper planning. The segments move quickly and appropriately from one to another. Even the youngest thespians will be kept involved. Appropriate use is with courses and workshops though individual viewing would also be valuable. Although the standard opening warning states otherwise, the purchase price includes public performance rights. A recommended purchase for all collections.
