Burnt Toast is a somewhat unusual and brave release from Bullfrog Films. It is a short comic opera of eight scenes depicting eight different stages of love and romance. First broadcast on the CBC television series Opening Tonight, it is a strictly Canadian affair from composer and lyricist to performers. The music is contemporary but accessible, with nary a tinge of dissonance. The filming is cinematic yet intimate and modern. The same creative team produced the award winning 6-minute opera Toothpaste, not included here in the Bullfrog release, but in the home version. Burnt Toast, itself highly recognized, was nominated for and won several Gemini Awards when first broadcast. The performances are thrilling and though they may not incite stampedes into local opera houses may create the interest to listen to more. What else could anyone ask of contemporary opera? A highly recommended purchase for all libraries.
