As one of the most popular ballets performed, especially in the United States, most are familiar with the story of young Clara and her beloved Nutcracker. This celebrated production is an especially visual treat with gorgeous costumes, bewitching sets and lighting, and magic growing Christmas tree. The entire production is classic in its best sense, not straying from original intent of story or choreography. In this her last year with The Royal Ballet, Miyako Yoshida dances The Sugar Plum Fairy gloriously. She has both the strength and delicacy of porcelain. Gary Avis’ realistic portrayal creates a more mysterious Drosselmeyer than the many cape swirlers of past productions. This is The Nutcracker for those who want their Christmases traditional and full of magic. The Nutcracker is one of a handful of ballets that can truly be viewed and enjoyed by all ages. Recommended for all library collections.
