An affectionate portrait of one of the founders of the Juilliard String Quartet and its first violinist for 52 years, this program covers Robert Mann’s early life in Portland, Oregon, (where he dreamed of becoming a forest ranger), his professional career as a dedicated chamber music performer, his role as a master teacher and mentor to young musicians, and his family life, which includes playing duets with his son, sometimes of pieces Mann has composed. The only thing missing seems to be a discussion of the valuable instruments he has played. Itzhak Perlman, Seiji Ozawa, Elliott Carter, and many other fellow musicians praise Mann’s musicianship and influence. Archival filmed excerpts of Juilliard String Quartet concerts in the US and Europe alternate with informal scenes from rehearsals and master classes, where Mann variously advises, (sometimes insistently) or praises the artistic efforts he hears. Sound quality is worthy of the subject and all the works excepted are identified. Colleges and conservatories with string quartets and communities with chamber music audiences will find willing viewers for this enjoyable film.
