Reviewed by Andrew Koval, MSLSGeryhalter's Homo Sapiens explores the extinction of the human race and the aftermath. There are no narration or interviews. Featured are stark sweeping scenes of architectural abandonment and nature. Therein is a complete absence of humans coupled with nature’s reclamation of landscapes. Equally meditative and dystopian in tone, viewers will reflect on the legacy of the human race as though in memoriam. The passage of time is made a central theme.
Homo Sapiens is lengthy though aesthetically charming in segments. The films audio offers ambient sounds of water, weather and wilderness strengthening a natural world perspective. This piece is apt for academic or public libraries serving an intellectual contingent as they reflect on the human condition.
