The Artist in Society: Talking with Hershell West is seemingly a one-dimensional subdued biopic of a regional artist. The cinematography, which is in the tone of a “Mr. Rodger’s Neighborhood” episode, reinforces this throughout. Nevertheless, as the film progresses the viewer ascertains there is a broader message being conveyed, particularly from (director/host) Eve A. Ma.

This film is an appeal to artists. Hershell West is showcased as to the values by which an artist ought to create. Ma explains that artists should create beautiful and meaningful pieces that sell without compromising their artistic integrity and all the while unifying the community with their art. Profound.

The featured art is uncontroversial and reinforces community values. And in this sense indicts artists whose values lean differently. Principally, this biopic is concerned with the usefulness of the artist in society.

Significant detail is provided on the background and career arc of Hershell West. Amicably, West delves into his career as an art teacher, a community muralist, and abstract painter. Footage of West’s mural work, art studio as well as comments from artists who collaborated with West are presented. Aspiring artists will find this piece encouraging and practical for exploring a career in the arts. The Artist in Society: Talking with Hershell West will enrich the collection of a school or college library.
