Each part documents a different environmental, economic, and cultural aspect of food. The documentary series can be watched on their own or as one longer documentary. Each episode is 43 minutes and very easy to watch.
Food 3.0 - Techno Foods is the first episode in the 3-part series. Techno Foods look at how Silicone Valley has funded the discovery and creation of lab-grown protein because of the increase in demand for protein. This episode takes a very good look at the different ways proteins are grown without using animals for that food source. Eggs, shrimp, beef, and milk are all being created in labs and this episode shows a look at each of these types of proteins. The environmental implications of the current way we are producing protein and how switching to sourcing protein in a lab will have positive environmental benefits are discussed. The economic and cultural challenges this new type of protein source might face could impact if we accept this form of protein in our society.
Food 3.0 - Bio Foods is the second episode in this three-part series about biodiversity. The episode looks at how our produce growth has changed due to an increase in population and GMO's that support larger quantities of the same ten produce items to be our commodities. Biodiversity has a positive impact on the environment and learning how to grow food without the use of GMOs can benefit the land, animal, and people. The episode also talks about the positive environmental benefits of eating bugs since they contain so much protein and are easy to harvest!
Food 3.0 - Frankenfood is the final episode in this series about genetically engineered animals for protein consumption. The discussion of genetically modified animals to require less food to grow, grow in all types of weather, and be resilient to viruses are the main goals in this area of Genetic Engineering. The argument also is that this is better for the environment because animals require less water or food to be used a food. The political implications of genetically modified proteins are discussed because the governments of some countries allow for GMO animals to be sold and others to not be sold. The economic impact of using GMO animals is also considered when looking to pass regulation on the use of this animal protein.
Food 3.0 provides an in-depth look at the future of food in the three series documentary. This series is highly recommended. The short, easy to digest episodes breaks apart one new aspect of food and gives great information on that one topic, but a note of caution, these episodes contain some graphic footage of the meat industry.
