Reviewed by Skye M. Limón, Electronic Resources Assistant Librarian, Texas A&M University-KingsvilleMary Janes: The Women of Weed is an educational documentary that is informative with some lightheartedness. The film follows film maker Windy Borman as she learns more about the cannabis market following her move to Colorado. She becomes interested in the topic when she discovers that women make up 36 percent of leaders in the legal field.
Overall the tone of the film runs from playful to serious. It is not a documentary with a lot of medical expertise although the basics are covered. Wendy does interview some experts in lab testing as well as business owners, and the interviews help give credibility to the topic. Melissa Etheridge has a part in discussing how it helped her through her cancer.
The policies and laws around marijuana are discussed but not thoroughly. It is mentioned that it is still considered a schedule I drug but can be approved for terminal illness. What is described in detail is the difference between recreational use and medicinal use marijuana. The difference between CBD and THC are stressed throughout the film.
This film is recommended for a starting point educational tool into the subject of alternative medicine.
