Reviewed by Andrew Koval, MSLSBrew’s Following the Thread explores the textile weaving traditions of the Andean people. This concise piece apprises viewers to the values of Andean weaving groups, efforts made to continue the tradition, as well as the manufacturing process of weaving traditional textiles in the Andean community.
The textiles act as a cultural identity document. The want to improve on their ancestors’ labor-intensive weaving is made apparent. This is collectively supported through first person interviews from members of the Andean weaving community.
Pleasant in tone, a quiet informative cinematic experience. A companion piece pertaining to the theme of cultural preservation is the film The Hadza: The Last of the First. Best suited for collections seeking an introductory topic on the Andean culture that can help facilitate critical classroom discussions and essay writing exercises.
