Reviewed by Dorian Bowen, Archivist/Film HistorianExtremely brief but whimsical, this film introduces audiences to the pre-colonial Filipino tradition of Kamayan specifically, as well as the broader concept of “eating with the hands" practiced in many regions across the world including Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
A modern demonstration is intercut with a vintage educational film about meal etiquette, thus contrasting traditionally rigid, American protocol, with the more relaxed and communal international approach.
What the film lacks in running time is recouped in its ample potential to inspire discourse in audiences of all ages, across a broad range of topics, including cultural anthropology, social psychology, mindful eating, world history, and race relations.
