Reviewed by Kathleen H. Flynn, Science Librarian, University at AlbanyAre human beings walking wave functions? Is our consciousness a quantum phenomenon? Project Q presents a compelling and entertaining look at the history and future of quantum mechanics. Although quantum mechanics has already led to the development of monumental creations such as nuclear weapons, lasers and telecommunications, MRI machines, and GPS, researchers have only begun to scratch the surface of possible applications. While the possibilities are exciting, will humans work together to develop and collectively benefit from these creations or harm each other in a competition to win the quantum computing race?
The film begins by sharing the events of the 1927 Solvay Conference where dozens of preeminent scientists gathered to debate the recent controversial and groundbreaking theory of quantum mechanics. Throughout the film, viewers are treated to educational segments that explain aspects of quantum mechanics such as complementarity, superposition, uncertainty, entanglement, and more. These lessons are accessible for laymen or students in any discipline. Viewers also hear from dozens of professors and researchers as they discuss the applications and concerns surrounding quantum technologies including surveillance, warfare, implications for artificial intelligence, and what it means to be conscious and human.
The film is a well-made and engaging exploration of a highly confusing and important field of study that will have global ramifications. It is highly recommended for courses or collections in physics, computer science, technology, or political science.
