Reviewed by Aaron Pahl, Digital Curation Librarian, University of Alabama at BirminghamThe Cure for Hate: Bearing Witness to Auschwitz is a compelling story about Tony McAleer and his journey from hatred to love with a focus on his visit to Auschwitz. The film blends historic and modern footage to illustrate connections between the past and present while emphasizing how seemingly small gradual steps can cascade into a much larger shift into fascism and hate. The footage shot at Auschwitz was clearly intended to be respectful of the space and all those who lost their lives while including enough detail to successfully impart the weight of the genocide that took place at the camp. The film was very deliberate and measured with an air of atonement throughout. Tony McAleer did not hide or shy away from his past and was open about what led him down his path while incorporating current extremist events to accentuate his arguments.
This film would be an excellent and timely resource for students and the general public that draws a clear path from the events of WWII to the present day. This film could lead to classroom discussions on extremism and be appropriate for a number of different subjects including history, politics, philosophy, and sociology.
