This brief, yet concise program provides an overview of Sickle Cell disease and the devastating world of its victims. It opens with a profile of Benjamin, a little boy who is suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia. His mother describes the excruciating pain involved with a Sickle Cell Crisis, which can happen at a moment's notice. Caused by a genetic disorder, Sickle Cell slowly destroys the body's organs, causing intense pain.

The program provides the requisite epidemiological statistics and outlines what is being done, or not being done, to combat the disease. It points out that government funding for research that was so strong in the 1970s, has been reduced to a trickle. Sickle Cell Diseaseā€¦The Faces of Our Children succeeds at driving home the message that more needs to be done to find a cure. Recommended as an introduction to the disease, this program would benefit patient education collections and public library collections.
