This skillfully written, animated short video will delight both young and old. Its far-fetched dialog narrates a tale about an adolescent girl, Dorothy Sue Ann Murguson, and her struggles to figure out and cope with everyday situations through the use of exaggerated fantasy. The storyline makes good use of the fleeting, but entertaining problems that Dorothy encounters, is referred for counseling, and eventually resolves on her own. The thoughts and plays on concepts are intelligent and the eventual “logical” cause of the effects is easily understood.

The video includes a study guide with thought provoking questions that can be used by educators to start discussions with younger viewers and more advanced students. This video might be used in conjunction with various publications to teach a unit dealing with the theme of fantasy. The guide also includes some recommended literature, with some choices, that can be used in addition to the video. This video could easily be adapted into juvenile fiction book format.

The Hungry Squid is really amusing and has many positive attributes that will appeal to a variety of audiences. Its technical quality is excellent; the video would be an exceptional purchase and wonderful addition to include in the collection of any school/public library, university curriculum center, or teaching setting.
