Managing People in the New Workplace focuses on the effects of change on management and staff, with an emphasis on change that is imposed on people due to downsizing, loss of personnel, etc. The narrator also emphasizes that in the new work climate, learning organizations will survive. Building lifelong learning into an organization will help give employees the skills to cope with unexpected change and to act accordingly. The video explores the four phases of change: comfort, reaction, exploration, and renewal. Each phase is dealt with individually. The typical staff reactions and actions required by managers for each phase are provided, accompanied by a dramatization to demonstrate how the phase might manifest itself and how managers can help staff to cope.

The video is short (only 15 minutes) and deals with the issues in a succinct way. It would be an excellent tool to use for a training session or in a “lunch and learn” situation. Another possibility would be to use it in conjunction with a discussion of a book like Who Moved by Cheese?

Managing People in the New Workplace is a good quality video. The picture and sound are clear, and the graphics included in the video are easy to read. One thing that might initially startle viewers is that the narrator and actors in the video are British. The British accents may be distracting to some viewers; however, this does not detract from the content of the program or the information conveyed by it.
