This short film originally created as part of a fundraiser for the Breast Form Fund focuses on the rite of passage of buying your first bra. The film strings together clips of adults, teens, and preteens – including several mother/daughter pairs – talking about their experiences. There is even a girl who hasn’t yet bought her first bra sharing her hopes and expectations. The clips are loosely grouped by subject, touching on such topics as what their bras looked like, the best part of buying a bra, and how that first experience could be better. A particularly wonderful sequence has several of the women speculating on why they call them “training bras.” Bra ads through the years are periodically displayed, adding a nice sense of history to the film.

This is a film that is more amusing than useful. Women will recognize much in these women’s stories, and the film is truly entertaining. There is no attempt to create a piece of social criticism or explore the topic on more than a superficial level. That said, this film would serve as an excellent ice-breaker or discussion piece in mother/daughter groups. It would also serve well in classes for parents and people who work with teens and preteens. Recommended.
