During the past 15 years, Kuwait has been at the center of several regional conflicts. It was invaded by Iraq in 1990 and more recently served as a main staging area for another conflict with Iraq. This British program describes how Kuwait has responded to the aftermath of the Gulf War. It touches on some of the major issues facing Kuwait, including the growth of Islamic fundamentalism, the growing women’s rights movement and the threat to traditional society posed by television and the internet. Interviews with businessmen, members of the government and ordinary Kuwaitis, address controversies such as the growth of western style democracy, government control of the media, and the fact that only 40% of the population are Kuwaiti citizens. A useful, though brief and expensive introduction to Kuwait.
