In the often-violent debates concerning abortion rights, it is easy to forget the real people involved in the controversy. This documentary focuses on the story of one doctor, Curtis Wayne Boyd. It attempts to put a face on those professionals who perform abortions. Raised on a farm in the Texas Bible Belt during the era when abortions were illegal (1960s), Dr. Boyd’s character and values are described in interviews with his family, friends, colleagues, and even a patient. Emphasis is given to Boyd’s religious upbringing and the fact that he became a Pentecostal minister as a young man. Scenes of family life and news footage characterize the era, while the narrative discusses the many social changes occurring at the time. The video illustrates Boyd’s growing awareness of the fundamental rights involved in the abortion issue and, at the request of a group of clergymen who were counseling young women facing unwanted pregnancies, Dr. Boyd agrees to become their medical professional despite the illegality of his actions.

Life Matters portrays Boyd’s philosophy and sensitivity to the needs of his patients, always speaking to them with respect and concern. His operating room is designed to offer a sense of safety and dignity.

Ironically, it was after the Roe v. Wade decision to legalize abortion when the threats and harassment became most frequent and more violent. The video’s strength is the straightforward manner with which the subject is presented. There is an absence of rhetoric and proselytizing. The power is in the simple story of an individual driven to help others. The fact that this documentary was made by Boyd’s son may explain the emphasis given to Boyd’s character and less upon the complicated issues surrounding the abortion debate.
