Recovering Krystal follows the treatment progression of Krystal Meade at the Alberta Addiction Recovery Center (AARC). The program at the Center combines the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous with individual and group counseling. Parents of the addict are also provided counseling to help them to better deal with their child’s addiction. The viewer is able to observe the treatment process from the perspective of both the addict and the parent creating a more dynamic piece.

This documentary style piece has good video and sound quality. Although the audience level is from senior high upwards, a few scenes contain language that may be strong for some.

The producer has done an excellent job of putting together a piece where the viewer leaves with a sense that the addict has made great progress toward getting well. We are given an inside view of what it is like to be an addict without the sensationalism of a Hollywood story.

This video is recommended for college and university libraries supporting programs focusing on addictions and for treatment center library collections for both patients and staff. Public libraries may wish to make this title available to parents who may be facing a similar situation.
