The Painting Basics Series is part of the Lucerne Media ART...Basic Instruction collection. There are three VHS videos in the series lasting 10 minutes each. The series is presented by Richard Bymes. Part 1: Tools & Materials explores on a very basic level how to select, use, and maintain the basic tools necessary for oil or acrylic painting. Part 2: The Canvas Sketch begins with Mr. Bymes sketching in a subject with charcoal directly on canvas, and then using his palette to add color. And Part 3: Painting the Picture completes the 30 minute session with an example of filling in the colors with the various tools and completing the painting. Mr. Bymes points out that this instruction is extremely basic and that is certainly true. It would only be of value for someone who has never attempted to do any kind of painting. Given that understanding, the instructions are clear and easy to follow. The programs would be useful for either an individual working alone or for small art classes. The production values of the programs are adequate with good lighting and sound. One wonders why with such a short program (only 10 minutes for each tape) the three demonstrations weren't combined on a single tape. Also, the price seems a little steep for only 30 minutes of very basic instruction, even though it is by a very talented artist. These programs would be appropriate for individuals, secondary school library collections, and public libraries. They would have little value for academic collections.
