On-the-job vignettes of ethical dilemmas identify key ethical concepts such as honesty, loyalty, integrity, confidentiality, empathy, and responsibility. The video follows Bruce McKnight, a newly hired professional software programmer, as he interacts with co-workers. Some of the decisions Bruce faces include how to handle racist remarks, a request for breach of employees' e-mail privacy, and betraying confidentiality of personal files.
The video pauses after each vignette so students can discuss each situation presented and how it should be handled. In considering ethical dilemmas, the narrator suggests to base decisions by putting oneself in the shoes of others. Ask, how will you feel about yourself once you’ve made a decision? Then navigate the work environment based on your own moral compass.
Throughout the videos, Dr. Farhad Rassekh, Professor of Economics at the University of Hartford, Connecticut, interjects useful comments such as, “those who succeed are hardworking, honest and moral” and “we admire the most people with integrity and dignity, who know what to do without being dishonest or deceptive.”
Business Ethics on the Job comes with a teacher’s resource book of eleven student activities pertaining to ethical challenges, a summary of ethical practices, and a related bibliography.
This video is an excellent learning opportunity for workplace ethical behavior and is highly recommended for middle school through grade 13. The Technical quality is very good, with sharp color, clear sound and logical order of events.
