This is a fascinating look at the B-2 Stealth Bomber. It presents a brief history of bombing, and the tactical requirements that the B-2 was designed to meet. One of the most interesting sections covers the “Amerikabomber” and the YB-49, World War II-era versions of the “flying wing” bomber. Computer-assisted flying brought this design to its full flying potential. The video discusses aeronautics and stealth technology, as well as the weaponry and actual missions flown by the B-2. The science presented is accessible to all, and downright fascinating. The Air Force cooperated in the production of this video, but of course much of the technology remains secret. Even shots of the cockpit are forbidden. The video describes how it might be possible to actually “trap” radar, not merely deflect it, and says that if such a technology exists, the B-2 is almost certainly wearing it.

The video is engaging and well done. The visual explanations of radar profiles and other aspects of the technology are very clear. The only unfortunate and truly annoying aspect of the presentation is the occasional statement that slides across the bottom of the screen. I found it impossible to read the interesting fact at the bottom without missing something from the audio narrative. The decision to present additional material in a manner that distracts one from the main narrative was a bizarre one.

In addition to the main narrative, there is a slideshow, a quiz (don’t give a wrong answer!), a guide to Air Force ranks, and information about Whiteman Air Force Base and the requirements for becoming a B-2 pilot. Some of the main feature is also repackaged as a 3-D tour of the B-2, which may be useful as a summary of the plane’s technologies.

Recommended for high schools and colleges with ROTC, as well as any collection supporting military studies or the history of aviation.
