Sinister and steamy, this film presents an innocuous-looking doctor caught in a maelstrom of infatuation, murder, and revenge. Whether or foot, on a bicycle, or in a car, the caddish Dr. Bickleigh makes his way from bed to bedside, employing his “healing hands” throughout the village of Wyvern’s Cross. Based upon the 1931 book by Francis Iles, (pen name of Anthony Berkeley Cox, a major crime and detective story writer) this “inverted mystery” broke with tradition by revealing the killer’s identity from the start and focusing upon the psychological aspects of the crime.

The actors give neat, crisp performances amid lush green settings, buzzing flies, and the whispering tones of village gossips. Berated constantly by his domineering wife, Dr. Bickleigh finds comfort in a passionate affair with soft-hearted Ivy Ridgeway. Later the not-so-good doctor dallies about in the dark, ornate salon of his artistic new neighbor, Madeleine Cranmere. Dr. Bickleigh’s handling of the demands of three women unfolds with disastrous precision. The scenery, cars, and clothing make this film particularly inviting. Though slow at the start, the film improves as it moves toward a richly ironic ending.

Filmed in Ireland, Malice Aforethought aired on PBS’ Mystery! in 2005. It is recommended for general adult audiences.
