Healthy Alternatives was originally broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s Alive! With Joyce Resin series which ran in the late 90s. In typical news program format, host Resin introduces viewers to the world of alternative modalities of healing. The use of alternative or complimentary medical therapies has blossomed in the West to a billion-dollar industry over the past five years. It continues to grow, and this program provides a glimpse into some of the reasons why people choose a less conventional approach to their health care.

Divided into seven chapters, this DVD touches on herbal remedies, Chinese medicine, Qi Gong, and alternative therapies for pets, in addition to a brief overview of other naturopathic techniques. Joyce Resin is a very appealing host for the program, asking good, basic questions in a neutral manner. While it doesn’t cover every type of therapy, it does touch on the basics and gives a good enough overview to get a taste of the options available for further exploration. Intended to introduce a lay audience to the terms, treatments, and variety of alternative therapies, Healthy Alternatives will find a good home in most public library collections. In academic collections, it would be best suited to those supporting senior high or community college level health classes.
