What is a fear? How is it different from a phobia? What is the “flight or fight” response and why do we respond with it? This video explains the difference very well. In simple and plain language teens will understand why the human mind and body reacts the way it does to certain stimuli.

Fears and Phobias: Understanding Them, Defeating Them discusses the history of the responses and what triggers them. How have those responses changed in order to cope with today’s world? As humans evolve so does the way our body responds to the ever-changing environment. Using real teens with typical teen fears this program addresses all of the above questions. The teens are shown interacting with a psychologist in a phobia clinic. They learn how to recognize the signs, symptoms and long and short-term methods for controlling their fears. It is tailored to not only dispense information but the format is interesting - not a dry documentary - which will appeal to the target audience and make it a valuable tool for the classroom. The accompanying curriculum is an added bonus for any educator who works with teens and mental health issues. It’s a plethora of discussion questions, strategies, and activities for reinforcement of the topic covered.

Fears and Phobias: Understanding Them, Defeating Them is a beneficial addition to any school library for use by health, psychology, or Family and Consumer Science departments.
