Torture: America’s Brutal Prisons takes a thorough look into three penal systems in the states of Texas, Florida, and California. Deborah Davies uncovers some of the harsh realities inside America’s prison system. The documentary makes use of actual video footage from inside the prison to demonstrate excessive use of force and punishment tactics. In addition, the reporter makes great use of interviews with current and former prisoners, corrections officers, and penal administrators. She attempts to reveal the scandals, loyalties, and punishments that are part of the prison environment. Furthermore, the unique blend of interview and investigative techniques enhances the reality experienced by the viewer.

The technical aspects of this documentary are intermittently of average quality; however, this is largely attributable to the majority of violent footage taken from prison cameras. This documentary is recommended with reservations to college level students due to its graphic nature and persuasive view.
