Reviewed by Lori Widzinski, Health Sciences Library, University at Buffalo, State University of New YorkAimed at a teenage audience, The New Food Pyramid provides a thorough explanation of this updated government nutritional tool. Clear, concise graphics help point out the various parts of the pyramid, (including a brief yet interesting history) with explanations by Princeton nutritionists (one of whom makes a minor misstatement early in the program by saying the pyramid helps differentiate between good fats and healthy fats). The young adult narrator/host fills in most of the information based on questions asked by other teens, a sort of FAQ outline approach. One nice feature of this program is that while explaining all the individual parts of the pyramid, it stresses its holistic nature with emphasis on using it as a tool for designing a healthy lifestyle – a real benefit for teens to learn early on. A professionally made video by Meridian Education Corp., The New Food Pyramid is recommended for junior and senior high school media centers.
