Designed for the 11-14 age group, this video package from Human Relations Media is a fine introduction to a healthy eating program. It introduces kids to the problem of obesity in the U.S. today and the health consequences of a poor diet.

Registered Dietitian, Ellie Krieger, who has appeared on numerous television shows about nutrition, lends her expertise to explaining how to make the right choices for a healthy lifestyle. Nutritious foods, exercise, and eating in moderation are all explored. The new food pyramid is explained, as well as body mass index and the USDA Guidelines. The role of fad diets, fast food, and mass marketing to teens are also given consideration as part of the problem.

Professionally produced, as are all Human Relations Media programs, Overweight in America is an upbeat, well-done introduction to obesity and how to overcome it. It is content-rich, forming a good base for instructors to go further and to foster discussion, but does not go in-depth into any one factor contributing to the obesity epidemic. Recommended.
