This documentary uses commemorative stamps as a visual cue to introduce ten seminal events in the Civil Rights Movement.
Milestones of the Civil Rights Movement is a compilation of brief archival footage highlighting significant civil rights events: Truman’s Executive Order 9981 Integrating the Armed Services, Brown v. Board of Education, Montgomery Bus Boycott, Little Rock Nine, Lunch Counter Sit-ins, Freedom Riders, the 1963 March on Washington, the Selma March and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Each vignette, a mix of moving and still photos with a voice over narration, is only minutes in length and presents a brief overview of the event in question. The film contains little analysis and interpretative materials. This documentary can be used to introduce the significant events of the Civil Rights Movement and thus it is a useful addition to the secondary school media resources collection.
