Shorelines: The Endless Ribbon is part of the Natures Treasures: Preserve and Protect series from Chip Taylor Communications. The filmmaker covers a great deal of information in 30 minutes and uses one particular wetland, Canada’s Rideau Water System, to illustrate some of the human-caused problems that can occur in wetlands and estuaries worldwide.

Viewers learn about the importance of wetlands as sites for primary producers and as habitat for multiple species. We also learn about problems that can be caused by housing developments, shoreline modifications, outdated sewage treatment plants, and the countless, sometimes confusing laws designed to protect estuaries and wetlands. The news is not all bad though-- we learn of the efforts of groups like MAPLE (Mutual Association for the Protection of Lake Environment) and various government agencies to help minimize human impact on shorelines and improve our stewardship activities. The film footage and computer generated images in Shorelines are well integrated, producing an educational and informative product. As the film points out, the lessons learned in Canada are applicable elsewhere as well. This film will be of interest to adult audiences and could ideally be used as an educational tool in junior-high and high school courses. Recommended it for public and school libraries.
