This introduction to nutrition for infants and children is detailed enough for lower level college classes and senior high school level health classes. It contains chapters on infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers, as well as the importance of staying active. The program excels at including up-to-date informative details that other programs sometimes miss – such as food allergies, vegetarianism, and introduction of new foods. The detailed section on breast feeding vs. bottle feeding is inclusive, and tries to be fair to both sides, but is slightly biased towards breast feeding.

Meridian Education is known for their quality educational programs, and this title is no exception. It’s difficult not to recommend this title, yet, unfortunately, it will not likely grab the attention of a student in the 18-23 yr. old age group. The biggest drawback is in the delivery. The visuals are average, and even with, or maybe because of the excellent editing, the program is almost too smooth. The clone-like narration, while not unpleasant, is just short of robotic and combined with the background elevator musak, creates a boring presentation. Maybe I’ve just seen too many of these types of programs, but it reminds me of this decade’s version of the filmstrip. An online clip is available, and for the reasonable selling price of $70 it will fit the bill for collections supporting first year undergraduate programs in the health sciences.
