Reviewed by Paul Moeller, University of Colorado at BoulderThe Lost Tribe follows lesbian comedian Sue-Ann Post on a visit to Salt Lake City, Utah where she addresses the annual Affirmation conference. Affirmation is a group of gay and lesbian Mormons and ex-Mormons who are attempting to reconcile their sexual identity with their faith. Post, who was raised a Mormon, had quit the church after suffering incest and realizing she was a lesbian. Years later Post confronts the lingering wounds left by the separation from church and family and takes part in the activities surrounding the conference.
Rachel Landers does an excellent job exploring the mixed emotions that Post feels as she gets reacquainted with Mormonism. Alternately humorous, touching, and thought provoking, this documentary explores the interplay of sexuality and faith. In doing so it reveals much about Mormon faith and culture.
This film will be of value to viewers with an interest in Mormon society and/or gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues. It is recommended to viewers from high school to adult and to the libraries that serve them.
