The creative genius of animator Sheldon Cohen and children’s author Aubrey Davis make The Three Wishes more than a mere adaptation of a well-known folk tale.

Aside from its charm and humor, this story of a poor junk dealer and his wife explores an array of noteworthy themes: contentment, negotiation, and adaptation. The film also provides a glimpse of Jewish culture, employing the Yiddish dialect and a spirited Klezmer musical accompaniment.

The technical and artistic quality of The Three Wishes is quite impressive. The film’s visual appeal stems from its brilliant color, aptly drawn characters, and intricate backdrops. The voices of Paul Soles and Linda Kash make the characters entertaining as well as endearing.

Teachers and librarians will find the film’s in-depth study guide helpful in discussing the plot, themes, and Jewish ethnicity.

Highly recommended for school and public libraries.
