Darwin’s Theory of Evolution is challenged by new ideas surrounding intelligent design (ID) or “teaching the controversy” in both films. The historical scientific debate continues when supporters of ID consider whether science education curriculum standards should be changed to reflect the new teachings in American public schools. As scientists, educators, parents, and political figures argue for and against the new theory, many believe that it is simply another way of teaching creationism which was declared unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court in 1987.

The Nightline segment is a condensed take on the scientific explanations of Darwinism, creationism, and intelligent design compared to A War on Science: Intelligent Design in the Classroom. Two aspects are explored in Classroom Challenge: Debating Darwin in the 21st Century. The first report is hosted by Jim Wooten who shares the story behind the Topeka Kansas State Board of Education hearings. The second piece is hosted by George Stephanopoulos who facilitates the heated arguments between Michael Ruse, Professor of Philosophy at Florida State University, and Dr. William Dembsky, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Philosophy at Baylor University. Dr. Dembsky is also a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute, a multimillion dollar think tank. The entire debate between scholars focuses on whether intelligent design teaches science or religion.

In comparison, A War on Science: Intelligent Design in the Classroom is more informative and serves as a primary source offering precise explanations of scientific evidence relating to Evolution and Intelligent Design. Major scientists and contributors from the Discovery Institute share their perspectives. Included are intelligent design leader, Philip Johnson along with Stephen Meyer, Michael Behe, and William Dembsky. The film also offers an in-depth look at the opposing landmark case involving the Dover, Pennsylvania Board of Education which holds historical significance. Although ID is rejected by a majority of the scientific community, the movement is supported by powerful political supporters and many feel that it will be embraced and carried on by future generations.

Both DVDs are of high technical quality and recommended for public, high school, and academic libraries. The videos can be used jointly in science education and provide excellent background information for research. Since the topic is unresolved and offers varied opinions, it makes for excellent classroom discussions.
