The story of Francis Xavier (1506-1552) is presented in this documentary-style film, filled with history and adventure and spirituality. Born in Spain to a noble family, Xavier became the "Apostle to the East" as a priest and missionary. He was in one of the core group of followers of Ignatius Loyola, who founded the Company of Jesus, commonly known as Jesuits.

Viewers learn that Ignatius was not a particularly holy man when it was decided he would become a priest, that he was quite wild when he went to Paris to attend the university, that meeting Ignatius Loyola changed him into a humble worker with the poor, and that he traveled throughout the East to bring the gospel to the people. His legacy lives on in the many schools and churches that bear his name throughout the world.

Lushly filmed vistas give a sense of place, as do the filmed exterior and interior of buildings. The visuals are top-notch, and are supplemented with maps, illustrations, paintings, and sculpture depicting Xavier and the places he lived. Actor Liam Neeson narrates the film, which also includes actors reenacting key scenes in Xavier’s life. Scholars as "talking heads" provide needed historical information.

Xavier’s story is told chronologically, from his birth to his death and beyond. It places him firmly in the context of his times and what was happening throughout the world. Visuals, sound, and editing are all excellent. Produced by Jesuits, the entire film has a very professional feel.

This DVD would be of interest to anyone who enjoys history, especially the history of the Catholic Church and the Age of Exploration. Catholic high schools and colleges should consider purchase, as well as other public or academic libraries where there may be demand.

In addition to the film, extra features are included on the DVD: "The Making of ... Xavier," the original trailer, "Behind the Scenes ... A Photo Gallery," and an interview with Jesuit Avery Cardinal Dulles.
