Reviewed by Brian Burns, Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney, VirginiaWhat is True contains the information necessary to form a basic understanding of the ground on which secular humanists stand. The DVD is broken into 10 chapters with each chapter answering a different focus question. Of the ten chapters questions included are: what is the meaning of life; what is the humanist narrative; do we need a god to be good; and, is death the end. Nine humanists, both learned and intelligent, are interviewed extensively for this program and each makes a significant contribution. Proper emphasis should be placed on the inclusion of Professor Paul Kurtz, one of the best known advocates for secular humanism. The answers to the questions (i.e. chapters) come by way of sound bites from these individuals as they explain their specific points of view. Viewers must keep in mind that, despite the title, there are not necessarily any truths in this film, but personal beliefs based on subjective study and the content contained therein can be compared somewhat favorably to religious content. This video would be good supplemental material for a 101 course on humanism. Recommended.
