The inspiring one-hour PBS special, Soundmix, brings together five teenage musicians for a workshop designed to build an appreciation for the diversity of American people and music. The goal of the workshop? To collaborate and create a piece of music—not so simple of a task considering the varying backgrounds of these fine young musicians. The “band” consists of Troy, a street wise improvisational jazz horn player from New Orleans; Gabrielle, a classically trained cello/bass player from California; NY raised Latin percussionist, Camilo, who learned to drum at age 4; Hovia from Idaho, who plays the traditional Native American flute; and Jake from West Virginia, who has been handed down the gift of old time fiddle music. The film explores the unique communities, culture, and mentors that have helped to shape each of their musical lives. Guests include trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Latin percussionist Louis Bauzo, and legendary old time fiddle player, Melvin Wine. In the end, these talented young adults learn that although they each have very distinct musical styles, they share a passion for the same beautiful music. Highly recommended and certain to harmonize with public, middle school, high school and college libraries with music education programs. Note: An online lesson plan, designed for middle and high school music and social studies classes, is also included in this interesting mix.
