InJoy Videos has added another fine instructional program to their catalog of birthing and parenting videos with Better Breastfeeding: Your Guide to a Healthy Start. The intended audience is new and expectant parents preparing to breastfeed their child, making this video a valuable addition to hospital, clinic and other patient education collections. However, academic health care collections will also benefit, particularly those with nursing education programs.

The DVD is divided into six chapters which cover everything from the biology of breastfeeding to the details for proper positioning and comfort. The chapter titles provide a good description of the content: How Breastfeeding Works; Latching on and Positioning; When to Feed Your Baby; How Much is Enough; Breast Care; and Breastfeeding Lifestyle. Using animation and actual footage, Better Breastfeeding clearly demonstrates the early phases of milk production and extols the benefits of breast milk for both mother and baby. It covers the details of what happens in the baby’s mouth when feeding, how to recognize hunger cries, observing baby’s stool production and diaper counts, and how to maintain breastfeeding while carrying on a normal modern lifestyle.

Better Breastfeeding is a good, basic, and up-to-date program on breastfeeding that will enhance any parenting and maternal health collection. Recommended.
