This fast-paced, eye-opening, and all-to-brief look at public art—broadly defined—is sure to change the way we experience our urban surroundings.

Photographer and filmmaker Alice Arnold focuses on the street as exhibition space for which corporate giants and individual artists compete. But corporations have the advantage of money and the perception of legitimacy while street artists are likely to be labeled subversives and vandals. Yet the riveting immediacy of street art connects with viewers in ways that advertising does not.

In addition to great visuals this documentary, set in New York City, includes astute commentary by artists, sociologists, marketers and the public at large. A particularly compelling aspect of the film is just how creatively these artists express themselves and the lengths to which they will go to “to be seen.”

To Be Seen leaves one wanting to hear more from these artists, to see more of their art—some is viewable online—and to explore one’s own urban space with new eyes. It is highly recommended for libraries and programs with collections in the arts and social sciences.
