Reviewed by Jessica Schomberg, Minnesota State University, MankatoThis documentary features interviews with residents of working-class Barking, England to explore the attitudes of white English residents toward newcomers from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Balkans. Points of conflict include skin color, food, religion, and language. With surprising compassion, the film investigates the sometimes-subtle differences that define “our people” versus outsiders.
The film skillfully and humorously exposes the often unconscious perceptions and fears that guide how people respond to what is new and different. Occasional use of profanities. Highly recommended for senior high school, college and general audiences.
