Reviewed by Brad Eden, Associate University Librarian for Technical Services and Scholarly Communication, University of California, Santa BarbaraThis short documentary is the story of the filmmaker's grandparents, Sophia and Dimitry Makedonsky, who came to the United States as teenagers in 1913 from their native Ukraine. As they grew up in the Midwest, Erickson often heard stories about the country that her grandparents had left, and so this film follows Erickson as she chronicles her travels to Russia to find some sense of her past. It brings up issues of personal identity and belonging that many immigrants will relate to, especially those who have come to the US from the Ukraine. A very interesting and personal story of finding one's roots.
