It is commonly accepted that good patient care includes the family within any care planning activities. However, it is not as clearly accepted related to the role of parents in highly invasive procedures or resuscitation. This presentation is based on the assumption that there is a role for the parents in this environment and that they can choose the parameters of their level of involvement, facilitated by a health practitioner whose only function is to constructively manage parents involvement in a high stress invasive procedure environment.

With the use of actors, two case scenarios are presented, one with a 5 year old child and another with a 6 week old infant. Each set of actor/parents portray very different types of personalities and in the mock scenarios the health practitioner must make rapid assessment of how to best manage their involvement. Following each vignette there is discussion among the actors and the group of health practitioners who both observed and participated in the process. Although not a flashy technical production, it is recommended for the simple and direct manner in which it addresses the topic, and for the thoroughness of its discussion points. A supplemental DVD contains a considerable amount of training materials from case scenario overviews to PowerPoint discussion materials.
