A chronicle of the artist Patrick Dougherty’s 2005 installation at New Jersey’s “Grounds For Sculpture” sculpture park, Twisted Logic documents one sculptor’s passion for the natural world and the inspiration he draws from it.

Working within the park’s hangar-like galleries and enlisting an army of volunteers, Dougherty builds five site-specific sculptures by weaving tree saplings, mostly by hand. The finished work is quite breathtaking, with large windswept bundles of sticks resembling birds’ nests that appear to have sprung up from the ground and flow throughout the space.

Shot on video in a relaxed but informative style, the film follows Dougherty at work, and interviews him as well as numerous volunteers, visitors and staff, with many sharing how being involved in the project has had an impact on them. Viewers get a glimpse into the creative process, as well as the logistics and planning needed to carry out such a large-scale installation.

Images of Dougherty’s work can be found on his website.
