This is Part 1 of a two-part series on the explorers of the New World. The three explorers Columbus, Vespucci, and Magellan and their voyages are not only accounted for here, but also their contributions to mapmaking and geography and how their voyages helped to expand and change the world view of their own time and subsequent time periods. This volume provides a short history of maps in the Middle Ages, Portugal and the spice trade, each of the above-mentioned explorers, and a quick discussion of Patagonia and the crossing of the Pacific. An interesting, if rather short presentation of three major historical explorers and their influence on mapmaking and geography.
