Fans of experimental short films will rejoice with this third release in the Cinema Different | Different Cinema series. A total of 9 films from the 10th Festival des Cinémas Différents de Paris are showcased, carrying on the Festival’s tradition of championing groundbreaking filmmakers working in a variety of film formats (color/B&W 8mm-16mm-35mm, digital video).

On the nature of Cinema Different | Different Cinema, Marguerite Duras states: "To make different cinema is above all refusing to put up with the cinema of consumerism. The place of different cinema is a tragic place, above all a place of denial." Her 1979 short film Césarée opens the program—a thoughtful meditation on history and what it leaves us, with beautiful tracking shots of statuary in the Tuileries Garden underscored by Duras’ pensive narration.

A dreamlike, haunting beauty pervades the rest of the collection, with striking archival (and even Hollywood) footage re-mixed into indelible surrealistic collages of images and sound.

The 9 films:

  • Césarée [Marguerite Duras]
  • Idéal (Fin de l’) [Isabelle Blanche]
  • Empreinte [Xavier Baert]
  • L’oeil lourd du voyage mécanique [Augustin Gimel]
  • Untitled N° 1 [Masha Godovannaya]
  • Reste-là ! [Frédérique Tachou]
  • Le Bombardement Le port des perles [Richard Kerr]
  • Desde la memoria [Christina von Greve]
  • Cabinet [Robert Todd]
