Important, complex economic and social realities are demystified in What's the Economy for, Anyway? Ecological economist Dave Batker presents these challenges to the current way of life in the U.S. in clear, simple language with plenty of humor. This timely documentary is edgy, factual and even poignant. Basic concepts like the Gross Domestic Product or GDP, which has long been an inadequate measure of how the American economy fares, are analyzed and questioned in the light of the world today and includes a discussion of how to measure the success of our economy. And, why does the gap between the rich and the poor continue to grow? This question and more are presented for discussion. Batker engages the viewer and offers a holistic critique of our current market worshipping model of economic growth and its horrendous cost to our planet and the quality of our lives.

Video techniques and effects are terrific and thoughtfully woven together. Editing is so very carefully and completely present so that the many aspects of this topic can be examined, but masterfully the documentary is kept to forty minutes. Academic and public libraries will want to purchase to encourage viewers to reflect on our values and priorities as a nation, community, and individuals.
