This Kartchner Caverns DVD is part of the Arizona Backroads Series, which focuses on unique Arizona locations. Kartchner Caverns State Park is located in Benson, Arizona, about 50 miles from Tucson.

Narrated by Marshall Trimble, Arizona’s Official State Historian, and Gary Tenen, cavern co-founder, the video tells the caverns’ story. Founded in 1974 by two hobbyist cavers, Randy Tufts and Gary Tenen, Kartchner Caverns is best known for slow growing (1 inch every thousands of years) stalactites and stalagmites and its large bat population. It was named after the rancher who owned the land.

Interestingly, the caverns’ existence was kept a secret from the public until 1988, to permit the establishment of protective measures. The State Park was opened to the public in 1999. Tours are kept small—under 20 people.

This video provides a good general overview of this park, and takes an interesting look at its unique features. A plug at DVD’s end for the Arizona lottery, saying it provides money for Arizona State Parks, provides an interesting conclusion.
