In Independent America, former journalists Hansen Hosein and Heather Hughes hop in their car and spend 52 days traversing the United States in search of the few, the proud, and the still “locally owned” businesses that remain free of ties to the larger corporations that dot the landscape. Eschewing all major chains, and travelling only on secondary roads, Hosein and Hughes interview merchants as well as community members for their thoughts on big lot stores, and the effects of these entities on the economies of their towns. Commentaries usually center on WalMart, Borders, and Starbucks. The film would be stronger if it featured more representation from the big chain executives, and some interaction between said executives and local merchants.

Though the subject matter is serious, the hosts do not take themselves too seriously, and there are no “ambush” moments `a la Michael Moore. Independent America is well-suited for public and academic libraries, and is recommended for stimulating thoughtful discussion in the areas of business, economics, and American studies.

Audio and visual quality is good, and there is even an occasional bluesy soundtrack.
